Launching Nila—global healthcare management platform

The problem

Remittance payments—the money sent from immigrants to their families back home—are vast in size—around $850 billion globally each year, with about $10 billion from the UK alone. Healthcare payments represent a large proportion of that, around 10-15%.

And while remittance payment processes have been digitised, there are still numerous challenges and frictions. Many report the unpleasant and frustrating experiences of caring for family back home, not just through managing cross-border payments across multiple platforms, but in coordinating care remotely, and making frequent trips back home to visit and check-in. These adjacent markets—from travel to payments to healthcare—are ripe for disruption.

The solution

Nila is a global healthcare management platform that helps immigrants care for their families back at home. Their vision is to build a platform that provides the same level of care and assurance as you would get if you were there yourself. Nila first launched operations in India, serving the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) market that live in the UK/US.

The service offers users close visibility and 24/7 updates on the care of their family members. This includes 24/7 emergency support, a family care concierge service, access to a medically trained family care manager, appointment assistance, as well as access to appointment and check-up data.

Nila is currently partnering with local healthcare and telehealth partners to expand their offering before expanding into health insurance and providing tailored plans for specific conditions.

Nila is already live in Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad, with plans to launch in up to 10 more cities across India in the near future

The team

Anthony Jacob (CEO & Founder)

Founder Anthony is a seasoned entrepreneur with experience in the remittances industry. He was Head of Growth, East Africa at Taptap Send, the remittance payments app for underserved markets.

Why we’re excited to invest

Olly Betts, fintech sector director, says: “The health of loved ones is the priority for the majority of families. But how do you ensure this if you live on the other side of the world? Nila has a huge vision: anyone living abroad can provide quality care for their loved ones back home, just like they would if they were there. That’s why I am so excited to be working with Anthony and the team to make healthcare borderless. Healthcare + Fintech + Global Mobility = yes please!”

What Nila is looking to get out of the programme

  • Building out our supply network in India and launching more cities

  • Testing B2B partnerships to offer more NRIs the ability to care for their parents back home

  • Testing more growth channels to further reduce our CAC
